Harwich police station will no longer be manned 24 hours a day from June.

Civilian staff who run the Tendring district's service desks will all be based at Clacton police station from the summer.

The move means the Harwich station's front counter will be closed for part of the night.

Bosses have stressed police officers will not be reduced and will continue to patrol the town.

It has not yet been decided what Harwich police station's opening hours will be.

Chief Insp Craig Robertson said the move would mean a better service for the public.

The centralisation of service desks is being bought in at police stations across Essex.

A phone is to be installed outside Harwich police station so anyone who arrives when it is closed who urgently needs to see a police officer can speak to an operator who will divert a patrolling officer to the station.
