The son of Rayleigh PC Rod Daniels is paying the highest possible tribute to his father - by taking on his precious officer number.

PC Daniels, 53, died instantly a month ago today (Friday) when he was hit by a car as he attempted to guide vehicles away from the scene of an accident on the A12.

The officer, who won a string of bravery awards, had served in Southend for more than 30 years and worked from the Rayleigh road policing unit.

His proud 19-year-old son, Brett, announced his intention to join the force at his father's official police memorial service.

The youngster, who is completing his A-levels before taking up his post, told the packed Chelmsford Cathedral he had been accepted into Essex Police.

He has now expressed his pride in his father's life and career again by asking senior officers for permission to take on the sentimental collar number 2216.

Assistant Chief Constable Joe Edwards has now granted the wish because of "special circumstances".

PC Steve Holgate, family liaison officer for the Daniels family, said the move was a fitting tribute. He said: "Brett wanted to take on his dad's number even before he died. He was already in the process of joining but it is now all the more poignant."

Brett is expected to start with Essex Police soon after his exams in the summer.
