A BUNGLING armed robber fled from a Pitsea off-licence empty-handed after he failed to open a cash till.

The man, who was wearing a balaclava, struck at the Drinks Cabin, in Rectory Road, at 8.30pm on Saturday.

He threatened staff with a black-coloured handgun, leapt over the counter and tried to get cash from the till but when it would not open, he made off.

The man was white, around 20-years-old and he was wearing a black jacket, dark jogging bottoms and light-coloured trainers.

Anyone who saw the man escaping from the scene or has other information is asked to contact Basildon police CID on 01268 532212.
