Big target man Conlon finished off a great move by man-of-the-match Karl Duguid and Joe Dunne to register the only goal of the game in the 56th minute as the U's put their lack-lustre midweek defeat at the nads of Port Vale behind them.
It was one of the most stirring displays of the season so far from Steve Whitton's Layer Road men who went into the match knowing that another defeat could have left them perilously slipping ever near er to the drop into the Third Division.
The win, however, keeps the U's five points and four places clear of the four relegation places with 11 games still to play.
