Mobile homes in Hullbridge could be swept away if the River Crouch flooded, a resident said.

John Whitcher, 65, who lives off Kingsmans Farm Road, Hullbridge, spoke after Rochford District Council planning committee approved a £900,000 scheme to improve the tidal defences.

He welcomed the Environment Agency scheme to raise and widen the clay embankment east of Hullbridge and strengthen the sea wall to keep even the highest tides at bay. Standing outside his mobile home, just yards from the river, he said: "If that flooded it would be a disaster. It would be devastating."
