Antisocial behaviour by weekend revellers in Colchester has prompted a shop to apply for permission to put up new security grilles.

Staff regularly arrive for work at the long-established school outfitters Newson and Son Ltd on a Monday to find vomit and urine down the windows and bottles and fast food wrappers thrown over the top of the existing grilles.

Now the company which owns the shop has applied to Colchester Council for permission to replace the grilles with new ones which will be electrically operated and housed in an area behind the shop sign in an attempt to prevent such incidents from continuing.

Area manager Michael Wren said: "The present grilles have a gap at the top. Rubbish including bottles and fast foot wrappers and cartons are regularly thrown over the top.

"People also stand up close to the window and urinate through the grilles and we also have problems with vomit.

"We hope the proposed new grilles will solve these sort of problems."

Mr Wren said security was definitely an issue behind the proposal but added the present grilles were past their best having been installed at least 20 years ago.
