A man was stabbed during a late-night street argument in Braintree town centre.

The victim, who comes from Braintree and is in his 20s, was attacked in High Street. He was returning from a night out with friends when the incident happened between 2am and 3am on Saturday.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, by ambulance with a cut at the top of his leg, near his groin.

A Braintree police spokesman said: "Police are still trying to piece together the sequence of events which led to the wounding, and establish what weapon was used to inflict the injury."

He added: "We haven't ruled out a knife, but also we haven't ruled out a bottle or a piece of glass."

The spokesman added witness statements taken soon after the stabbing were "unclear" about what exactly happened.

A 22-year old man from the Braintree area was arrested on suspicion of assault soon after the wounding and was taken to Braintree police station where he was interviewed by CID officers.

He was released from police custody without charge on Saturday afternoon, pending further investigations.

The wounded man stayed in Broomfield Hospital overnight on Saturday for observation and was released on Sunday morning.

Witnesses are asked to call Braintree CID on 01376 551818 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
