The sound of the Dambusters' theme will echo along Southend seafront when veteran Second World War aircraft take to the skies in this May's airshow.

The magical roar of the Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes along with the unmistakable thundering of the Lancaster bomber will be unleashed on Sunday, May 27 and bank holiday Monday on May 28.

One of the most famous air clashes in world history will be commemorated with the display by aircraft lovingly restored and maintained by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team.

Squad Ldr Paul "Major" Day, officer commanding the memorial flight, said he was delighted to be taking part in the airshow which is sponsored by Westcliff Casino.

He said: "This is my 22nd season with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and I have appeared at the Southend Airshow at least four or five times. I am looking forward to coming back as it always draws a good crowd."

He said the fact that the ancient aircraft were still flying more than 60 years after they started fighting in the war was a tribute to the dedicated staff at memorial flight's base at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

One the group's Tornado F3s will also be flying in the Southend Airshow.
