Last Sunday saw the belated start of the Essex Road Race League following cancellations due to the foot and mouth crisis.

In the Maldon Road Race at Steeple, East Essex, Richard Whitehorn opened the Glendene's account with fourth place in the third, fourth and junior categories road race.

After attacking from the start with Derek Smith (Crest CC) Whitehorn was caught by a group of 3 riders with 10 miles to go and he paid for his earlier efforts when it came to fightingout the final sprint up Steeple Hill, Lee Rowe (Interbike RT) taking the honoursin the sprint.

In the Elite, first, second and third categories race, Sean Kilroy made it into the top ten against stiff opposition, the race being won by Gary Baker (Angliasport - Condor).

Also on Sunday in the Ciclos Uno juveniles race, Edward Whitehorn broke away on the last lap to win the 10-mile event, thus saving the judges the task ofidentifying the winner in a bunch sprint, something they haven't had to do in a juveniles race since the Ciclos Uno races started

The day before, Glendene fielded a team in the Lea Valley 25-mile time-trial at Ugley, North Essex. Brian McCarthy (58m17s) and Nigel Harris (1hr 0m18s) were second and third. Richard Shaw completed the team with a 1hr 03m 0s.

The winner of the event was Robert Pope (Finsbury Park CC) with 56m 58s.
