Road rage incidents and deaths caused by drowsy drivers could be cut by an innovative new in-car gadget, according to a north Essex firm.

But Essex Police are remaining tight-lipped about the impact the aromatherapy essential oil distributor could have on accident statistics in the county.

The owner of Brightlingsea-based Mirabella Oils claims the device could calm down angry motorists and stop them "getting out and thumping someone".

Mirabella has won a contract to sell the US-produced aromatherapy distributor in the UK, where it is not yet widely available.

The product, which is the same shape and size as a fountain pen and plugs into the car's cigarette lighter, will cost about £20.

When heated up, the distributor gives off the smell of essential oils which can clear tension and calm anger, the Mirabella Oils owner said.

Mrs Parker has spoken to Essex Police about the device and asked to use recent road accident statistics in the county for research.

A spokesman for Essex Police declined to comment on the device.
