Judith Smith achieved a hole-in-one on the eighth while competing in Boyce Hill Ladies 11-hole Stableford off full handicap.

However, her 18 points total was not enough for victory. This went to Pat Skeels on 19. Judith did manage runners-up spot, beating Jacqui Carter on countback.

Maureen Smith was next on 17, while countback saw Ann Craig home over Edna Miller after both finished on 16.

Pat Simmonds was on 14 with Shelagh Arrowsmith edging out Iris Balls on countback after both finished on 11 point tallies.

Two golfers finished on 10 - Kate Phillips proving the master of Chris Cox after better scoring on the closing half.

Gallic glory in Ladies contest

The ladies open golf day at the Essex Golf Complex at Garon Park, Southend, had a French connection.

For Guylaine Carriere, from Perpignon, was the handicap winner of the main event. Triumphant among the non-handicap players was Thorpe Bay's Eileen Robertson.

The introduction to golf event saw Katie Roberts and Sally Thompson victorious.

A total of 46 members of the fair sex participated on the day which, apart from competitions, also included golf instruction, lunch and a golfwear demonstration.

Said a club spokesman: "The whole day was a big success. Among those that attended were a number getting their first introduction to the game and we shall certainly be organising similar events in the future."

It was a particularly memorable day for one visitor, Marion Hogan who, courtesy of SMAC Continental, will have the use of a top of the range sports car for a weekend during the summer. She came out first in a draw for the prize.
