Colchester's crestfallen man-of-the-match Scott Fitzgerald has offered no excuses for the U's below-par display in losing to Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

The former Millwall captain summed up the performance: "We got what we deserved. It was very disappointing because we just never got going.

"The difference between the two teams was simple. We were on the back foot all over the pitch while Rovers were on the front foot throughout the match.

"We didn't do ourselves any justice out there. The pitch was very poor and very bumpy, but they still passed the ball around well on it and played a lot of good football too. We've got no excuses. They simply wanted it more than we did."

Fitzgerald said the longer the score remained at 0-0, the more he felt the U's might escape with a draw, but he admitted it was very frustrating to concede two late goals.
