COLCHESTER United crashed to a goal in each half at mid-table Northampton Town to leave their Second Division future still in doubt going into the final two weeks of the season.
A debatable 34th minute David Savage penalty and a 61st minute deflected shot from leading scorer Jamie Forrester earned the Cobblers their first win in seven outings.
The U's, meanwhile, who have now failed to win any of their last three matches, rarely threatened the Northampton defence and were fortunate not to lose by an even greater margin.
Only good fortune and the "save of the season" from U's keeper Andy Woodman, playing against one of his old clubs, prevented the home side from scoring again.
