A pregnant woman was treated for shock and smoke inhalation after her son accidentally set fire to a bedroom in their Ashfields, Pitsea home yesterday (Thursday).

Station officer Colin Lidbury, of Basildon fire station, said: "The woman's young son caused the fire by playing with matches in the bedroom.

"The woman was still inside trying to put the fire out when officers arrived, which is why she suffered smoke inhalation. The boy was unhurt."

Firefighters helped the mother, believed to be in her 20s, out of the house and gave her oxygen until the ambulance took her to Basildon Hospital.
