Steve Whitton takes his Colchester United squad to Northampton Town tomorrow (Saturday) with Keith Scott and Barry Conlon still fighting it out for the target man's shirt.

Scott has been in the starting line-up for the previous two matches, against Bristol Rovers and Peterborough.

But Conlon, who scored two goals in the 3-0 home win over Swansea in the game before, came on as a 67th-minute substitute against the Posh on Tuesday night and made Kemal Izzet's all-important late equalising goal.

Whitton said: "It's good to have competition for places like this, especially approaching a game like Northampton which we have to win.

"Both are big men with differing qualities and once our Division Two status is safe for another season I'll be sitting down with my assistant Geraint Williams and physio Brian Owen to have a good talk about the pair of them.

"Barry is very mobile with a good left foot and when he gets into good positions his leap to win balls is second to none. Keith on the other hand knows the game and has very good body strength."

The U's boss gave no hint as to which of them will be starting against the Cobblers, but Conlon has seven goals in 23 games to date while former Reading striker Scott has just one from nine outings in his two spells with the club.

Scott, meanwhile, will not be able to play against Reading tomorrow week because of an agreement between the two clubs following his free transfer move to the U's.
