Kemal Izzet will be wearing Steve McGavin's number ten shirt when Colchester United kick off their pre-season programme tomorrow (Saturday).
With McGavin poised to join either Third Division Luton Town or Nationwide Conference front-runners Dagenham and Redbridge, Izzet has adopted his shirt number for the 2001-2002 season.
And the livewire midfielder, who became an immediate hit with the U's fans after his signing towards the end of last season, is expected to play a major role as the U's kick-off their new pre-season campaign against Jewson League premier division outifit Bury Town at Ram Meadow, kick-off 1pm.
The kick-off has been brought forward two hours at the request of former U's favourite Richard Wilkins who is Bury's manager.
Other U's number changes include goalkeeper Andy Woodman from 29 to 13, central defender Scott Fitzgerald from 26 to 13 and striker Dean Morgan from 27 to 16.
"I've tried to keep things as much as they were so the lads are still very familiar to the fans," said Whitton.
The U's boss said he would be taking two teams to Bury who will be playing 45 minutes each.
He said: "All the players, including the four triallists, Paul Hughes, Ricky Lopez, Anthony Allman and Bobby Bowry will be involved.
"Our aim is to be more adaptable at any time in any game. The season starts here and we are all ready for it."
