Travelling Terry the terrapin was found wandering through Weeley - and now a hunt is on to find his owners.

The roaming reptile has been handed in to Kinfauns vets in Little Clacton, who have been feeding him pilchards and dried cat food.

But they are anxious to find Terry's rightful owner and return him home.

Practice manager Nicki Fenwick said Terry was a red-eared terrapin, which was quite unusual.

She said: "They start off at about the size of a ten pence piece but can grow to the size of an average garden tortoise.

"They became extremely popular at the time of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but they are actually exotic pets and need special care.

"They have to live under infra red lamps and eat a special diet."

Miss Fenwick said Terry was quite heavy and had obviously been looked after.

She added: "Usually people give us a ring if they lose their pet but so far we have not heard anything."

Terry was found in Weeley and was taken into Kinfauns in The Street by a member of the public on Monday.

Anyone who thinks he may belong to them should call Kinfauns on 01255 860555.
