Maldon residents are being invited to have their say on future access to historic St Giles Leper Hospital, in Spital Road, after vandals forced the closure of the site.

Town councillors have discussed taking away fences and other barriers to make it more open, believing it could prevent further damage.

"If the whole area is opened up it may detract from the risk of vandalism," said Maldon Town Council clerk Helen Vincent.

Dating back to 1164, the site was closed in May this year after graffiti was sprayed on the walls, holes were found in the building, and door frames were ripped out.

Mrs Vincent said they wanted more input from visitors before a decision is made.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the discussions on the landmark's future should contact Mrs Vincent on 01621 875373 or write to Maldon Town Council Offices, Town Hall, Market Hill, Maldon, Essex. CM9 4RL.
