A plan for residents-only parking in roads off Leigh Broadway will be discussed by a newly-formed working party.
The idea was put to Leigh Town Council's transport and highways committee by member Jeanette Rowswell.
Members of the committee supported the idea in principle, said town clerk Geoff Fulford, but felt there was a considerable amount which needed to be looked into before any decision could be made.
He added: "The working party will be aiming eventually to come forward with a proposal which can then be put to Southend Council, as the highways authority."
Mrs Rowswell said people who lived in the area and had no off-street parking found they cannot park near their homes during the day.
She suggested parking in these roads for shoppers and other visitors should be restricted to one hour.
