Basildon Rugby Club are looking confidently to the new season as thousands of pounds worth of renovation nears completion.

The clubhouse - twice decimated by fire - is now spick and span, while their troublesome pitch has at last been given some drainage.

The London Three North-east outfit has also attracted a substantial sponsorship deal which they hope to put towards a programme of rugby coaching in schools.

They are currently gearing up for a senior ten-a-side tournament at their Gardiners Close home on August 11 when former British Lions star Nigel Horton will be present at a 14-team festival of rugby.

Basildon's director of rugby, Scott Liebenberg, believes the new-look premises have helped to heal the wounds of controversially missing out on promotion last year.

The new towners were denied a play-off place when an opposing team turned out a weakened team against leading rivals Rochford in the last match.

He said: "We now have a fresh impetus after that disappointment. The new clubhouse is excellent and we're hoping it will be a focal point for the whole community in Basildon."

The club, based at Gardiners Close, hope the new facilities will even be attractive to the community as a location for non-rugby functions.

Liebenberg is also recruiting players of all ages for the new campaign in September.
