Southend sprinter Sarah Wilhelmy is facing a make-or-break week.

The British 100m champion, 21, was on Tuesday named in the British squad for next month's event in Canada in the sprint relay, but is desperate to make the individual 100m.

She has two chances to beat a strict qualifying time of 11.36 seconds before the final team is announced next Monday.

She was due to make her first bid at the Bedford International on Wednesday - when she was also to be running in the 200m - before going on to the Norwich Union Grand Prix on Sunday.

In the latter meeting she could run against the Olympic 100m champion Marion Jones, one of the superstars of world athletics.

Wilhelmy, who set a wind-assisted time of 11.24s in Arles last month, said on Wednesday: "I know I can do it.

"I know what kind of shape I'm in and I was only five hundredths of a second outside the 100m time at the British championships last weekend.

"Now I'm just trying to shake off my nerves - as well as keeping my fingers crossed for good conditions."
