Swan-minders are keeping vigil over a snowy-plumed bird who has taken to waters in Dovercourt.

Mistral, a seasoned visitor to the town, arrived at the model yacht pond in March and is mothering six cygnets born earlier this spring.

But the plight of the swan has been difficult and concerned environmentalists have taken her under their wing.

The female adult has seen two of her mates killed and several of her cygnets taken by foxes since she started visiting Dovercourt to nest two years ago.

Another cygnet was also removed from the pond by police after it became water-logged.

Eileen Tyrer, who has been caring for Mistral, said: "I am sure a lot of people must be wondering why she is on her own, but unfortunately her mate has been killed.

"Once again, Mistral was on her own and in need of help with her cygnets. She became very stressed when the other pair of swans moved into her territory, so it was decided to move the family to the boating lake."

Mrs Tyrer appealed to the public for their co-operation in helping her, and her young, settle safely in their new home.

"The only alternative for the swans is to be moved somewhere safer, however we really don't wish to have to make that decision, so it's up to all of us to make sure that they are protected," she added.
