Basildon Hospital consultant urologist Willem Bijl must wait to hear if he will be reinstated after Law Lords reserved judgment on his appeal.
Bijl was struck off by the General Medical Council last November for his treatment of 61-year-old Mary Love.
The Council ruled his conduct was "inappropriate and irresponsible" after hearing how Bijl went home while Mrs Love, of Pilgrims Lane, Grays was rapidly losing blood.
She died from complications after the surgeon performed surgery to remove a large kidney stone.
Bijl had continued to operate on Mrs Love even after his anaesthetist advised him to stop because she was losing worrying amounts of blood.
At the appeal, Geoffrey Robertson, QC, for the doctor, said the striking off was "excessive and disproportionate".
"He made it clear he was on call for this patient and didn't anticipate the situation or urgent need," he said.
Wait - for consultant urologist Willem Bijl
