Canvey residents have demanded protection for the island's historic buildings after the demolition of a First World War army camp.

The dilapidated buildings near Thorney Bay Beach Park were taken down because they were dangerous for inquisitive children and contained asbestos.

There are plans to build 116 homes on parts of Thorney Bay Beach Camp - owned by island businessmen John Pring and Graham and Jeff King - on land opposite Thorney Bay Road.
