The sailor nicknamed Captain Calamity has set off successfully on his latest attempt to sail around Britain for charity.

Businessman Stuart Hill, 58, of Maltings Wharf, Manningtree, set off again in the 14ft boat Maximum Exposure on Saturday, putting the several setbacks of late behind him.

Mr Hill first announced he was to leave for the trip at the end of April, but an allergic reaction to resin on the boat held him back.

He then set off on his non-stop trip in May, hoping to raise £20,000 for six charities. But problems with the boat and other difficulties meant he only got as far as Cromer.

His next attempt suffered further mishap and he had to stop the trip again, this time in Southwold earlier this month, putting the boat on stilts while he carried out repairs.

Undeterred, however, the intrepid sailor set off again at the weekend. A spokesperson for Yarmouth coastguards said he had so far suffered no problems.

Over Saturday and Sunday regular contact was made by the coastguards to check that he was safe.

On Sunday evening he spoke to the coastguards to give his course and speed.

A spokesman for Yarmouth coastguards said: "We are not happy about him going but we cannot stop him. We do have a duty of care, if he gets into trouble we will go to help him.

"He has said he will call on a regular basis, whether he will or not is up to him."
