A superstore is closing for a £2.5m facelift.

The Sainsbury's store in Toft's Walk, Braintree, will close for six days from 6pm on Thursday, August 2.

Builders are coming in to remove all the furnishings and replace them with the latest designs.

A meat counter and salad bar will be installed.

Branch manager Mervyn Chilvers said: "There's going to be a lot of working and building. The store will be gutted and completely redone.

"Customers have been requesting an extended salad bar and a meat counter for some time and we are responding to that request.

"Everything in the store is being replaced, from the tills to the aisles and other fixtures."

The refurbishment will take place inside the existing building and managers hope to increase the range of products by ten per cent.

Mr Chilvers said: "We feel we need to upgrade the store and give it a fresh look. Obviously there will be some disruption to customers, but we feel the new store will be worth it."

Customers will be able to use a special bus service, covering the refurbishment period, to take them from the Braintree store to Sainsbury's in Springfield, Chelmsford.

The store, which opened 19 years ago, will reopen on Thursday, August 9 at 9am.
