A supermarket war has broken out between Maldon's two biggest food stores.

After hearing that Tesco at Fullbridge has been given permission to expand into a superstore, Safeway has hit back with its own plans.

The supermarket's bosses are asking for permission to sell more goods, including clothes and electrical items, so it can compete with its rival.

And councillors are set to agree the changes when they meet on Wednesday.

The store wants to sell electrical appliances, watches, clocks, clothes and luggage, all of which it was barred from stocking when it opened.

But the shop in Wycke Hill will not be expanding - just fitting in the extra items alongside its current lines.

Tesco caused an outcry from town centre shopkeepers when it announced plans for dramatic changes. Worried traders feared their businesses will be affected when the store expands to sell new ranges, including clothes and electrical items like televisions.

Now Safeway is hoping to follow in its footsteps. The final decision will be made by the central area planning committee on Wednesday night.
