Work on refurbishing Romford's oldest shopping centre, The Liberty, has started, as part of the Romford Revival programme.
A new pedestrian entrance is being constructed with a ramp and a lift, providing easier access between bus stops on Mercury Gardens and the town centre's other shopping centres.
Shops will also be rearranged and a glass roof is going to be built over The Liberty.
Town Centre Manager Gillian Balfe said: "The future of the town centre is re-affirmed by this exciting new project.
"Today's shoppers are demanding more choice and first class facilities, all of which will soon be offered as a result of the investment currently being injected."
Work on the scheme is expected to last several months, and will slow down in November for the busy Christmas period.
