The athletics career of Somma Power is really blooming in the summer.

July is turning out to be a fabulous month for the Basildon Athletic Club shot putter.

Earlier in the month she claimed the English Schools' Championship intermediate shot put title in Exeter.

Then, at the weekend, the Southend High School pupil found a personal best of 12.13m at just the right time to claim third spot in a major schools' international in Ireland.

Somma, representing England, found herself in a thrilling contest for honours in which she was eventually just pipped by two rivals from Scotland - the winner achieving 12.17, just four centimetres more than Somma, and the other just one centimetre less than her fellow countrywoman.

Now Somma, who lives in Thorpe Bay, is busily preparing for the AAA under-17 Championships, which go ahead in Sheffield in August 11 and 12.
