There was standing room only as villagers discussed Tiptree United's plans to build a new football ground.

But it was clear residents are not united in support of the scheme. Instead, the majority at the meeting were opposed to it.

More than 150 residents crowded into Tiptree parish hall for last night's (Monday's) open session of the parish council for a discussion which raged for two hours.

Later, parish councillors decided to defer their decision on any comments they will make to Colchester Council's planning committee about the proposed sports complex at Brook Meadows, off Perry Road.

Tiptree United's secretary and treasurer John Wisbey said the club, which was founded in 1933, wants to move from its Chapel Road base.

He said: "The main problem is it's getting older. The whole building is flat-roofed, which will need total replacement. "The club needs this move to survive. If it doesn't it will go out of existence. It should be considered an asset and not a liability."

The club has joined forces for the £1.2 million development with Granville Developments and wants to create a clubhouse with function and banqueting halls, a fitness studio and provision for other sports, together with a 250-seater stand.

The meeting heard the parish council had received 115 letters of objection but none in support to date, although Mr Wisbey said the club had collected 400 signatures in favour.

Many residents told the meeting they did not back the scheme off Perry Road.

Their worries included concerns over traffic congestion, noise, light pollution and possible flooding from Brook Meadow.

The West Side Action Group, which is opposing the proposals, is holding a meeting at St Luke's Church extension on Church Road on Thursday, August 2, at 7.30pm.
