Granded Ted Duke had a double reason for celebrating after the birth of his grandson Harry who he delivered on the lounge floor.

It came on the day when he netted another big catch. On one of his very first fishing trips he come home with a ten pound carp. Later on that evening he was contacted by his daughter to say she had gone into labour.

Theresa Walmsley had woke up and went into labour in the living room of her house in Drake Road, Laindon.

The 28-year-old started having contractions every minute and rang her parents to come over. They arrived within ten minutes and Ted waited in the street for the ambulance.

He said: "As I was waiting I heard a scream and found her on the floor. She was trying to hold the baby in, and was panicking. I just said we better do this and I tried to be calm and collected."

Ted, of Bourne Avenue, Laindon then delivered the baby boy and wrapped it in a towel. Theresa said: "He was great and really calm. I do not know what I would have done without him."

Ted said: "I was scared, but I knew I had to be strong. It was the most wonderful and beautiful thing to see. I just can't explain."
