A woman was rescued from her smoke-logged flat by a neighbour.
Firefighters from Grays and Orsett raced to the Davall House high-rise in Grays High Street to find the man and woman suffering from smoke inhalation.
Crews gave first aid before the pair were taken to Basildon Hospital.
Two firefighters went into the flat where a chip pan had been left on and unattended, filling the flat and first floor of the block with smoke.
