Kemal Izzet scored a controversial late goal at Fratton Park last night (Tuesday) as Colchester United knocked First Division Portsmouth out of the Worthington Cup.
With nine minutes remaining Izzet rounded Portsmouth keeper Dave Beasant to score the winner while defender Darren Moore was lying on the ground with a head injury, the referee having allowed play to continue.
Earlier in the half Micky Stockwell had put the U's in front, but Portsmouth's Peter Crouch headed an equaliser on 77 minutes.
The result means the U's progress through to the second round stage - a feat that has eluded the Layer Road men on too many occasions in recent years.
Ipswich Town made amends for their opening-day loss last night (Tuesday) by beating Derby County 3-1 at Portman Road.
