Steve Whitton will be banking on the all-round skills of his under-rated Colchester United squad to see off Bury tomorrow.
And it is likely he will have to do it without any new faces in the starting line-up.
The U's boss said: "Negotiations are still going on with Luton's Liam George and I am waiting to hear from Cardiff City if they are prepared to accept our renewed bid for striker Kevin Nugent and left-sided player Matt Brazier.
"I'm still hopeful our talks will be completed for George to sign in time for the Bury match, but we still have a bit of work to do.
"It is unlikely, however, that anything will happen in time for the Cardiff duo to take any part in our match tomorrow."
Whitton will also be minus the skills and hard work of his midfield pocket battleship Kemal Izzet who could be out of action for several weeks with the ankle ligament injury he suffered against York City last Saturday.
That means the U's chief will once again be banking on the all-round talents of his Layer Road old guard and the skills of play anywhere performers such as Karl Duguid, Joe Dunne, Gavin Johnson, Joe Keith and Mick Stockwell.
Whitton said: "Small clubs like Colchester need players like these and I am banking on their all-round abilities to bring home the bacon against Bury tomorrow.
"Bury have got some good players, especially the two lads up front, John Newby and Gareth Seddon, and they are certain to pull a lot of players behind the ball and make it very difficult for us to break them down.
"That's where we and our fans have got to remain patient, just like last week against York.
"The old Arsenal and Liverpool won many of their games in the last few minutes by remaining patient and taking their chances when they came."
