Part of a former family-owned department store is set to be transformed into a brand new entertainment venue.

Plans are in the pipeline to open a nightspot called The Piazza on the site of the former Keddies store off Southend High Street.

Now project boss Ivor Samuels has lodged an application for a drinks licence and magistrates in Southend are set to consider his case on March 4.

Mr Samuels has been unavailable for comment and solicitors representing him, Drysdales of Southend, have remained tightlipped about details of the scheme.

However, if work goes ahead it will mark a turn-up in fortunes for the rear of the premises which has been empty since the store closed down in February 1996.

Much of the site was redeveloped in the 1930s style of the original Keddies building and is now occupied by fashion store GAP, JJB Sports and Superdrug.
