Thurrock's cabinet member for education has welcomed the news of a planned Government reform of the education service for 14 to 19-year-olds across Britain.
The green paper called Extending Opportunities, Raising Standards, outlines the Governments plans to give school children more choice at the age of 14.
It is aimed at creating more flexible ways of learning to attract young people to stay in education and learn subjects they are interested in, with more emphasis on vocational studies.
Coun Carl Morris said: "I'm delighted that action is now being taken that will allow all of our young people to develop the confidence, skills and knowledge they will need as adults.
"I have long recognised the need for greater vocational teaching in our schools."
Coun Morris added: "It's encouraging that a more imaginative approach is now being taken to education as a whole."
