Ben Cranfield and fit-again Adrian Coote scored goals in the Colchester United reserves' 2-1 win over Barnet.
Oxford United's Richard Knight, who could be part of a deal that takes out-of-favour Andy Woodman to the Kassam Stadium, guested in goal yesterday afternoon.
Whitton said: "Knight had very little to do, but his kicking and distribution were good.
"I will be looking closer at a video of the match today before making any kind of move."
