Steve Whitton believes his Colchester United squad could be the real McCoy - if they lose their inferiority complex.

Whitton said yesterday: "We have played top dogs Brighton and Cardiff in the past couple of weeks and although we lost on both occasions, neither team was better than us.

"We really can be up there with the best if we only believe in ourselves.

"I have a mixture of young and experienced players now and I know we could shake up the Second Division's best if only we had faith in our ability to do so.

"The only difference between the Brightons and Cardiffs of this world is their consistency and ability to keep a clean sheet.

"Cardiff's clean sheet against us on Saturday was the only difference between the two sides.

"They have thrown pots of money at trying to win promotion, but are still far from certain of achieving that."

Whitton said: "This season has been another big one for us and we must learn our lesson from performances against the richer clubs.

"We are as good as anyone on our day if only we believe in ourselves."

The U's boss singled out two of his younger players, midflielders Kemal Izzet and Thomas Pinault, in particular.

He said: "This has been a big season of learning for those young guys.

"Kemi's come through it all very well, while Thomas is still finding his feet somewhat."

Whitton was also delighted with the debuts of youth teamers Marc Canham and Triston Chambers, who he pitched into the fray as second-half substitutes.

He said: "Their faces said it all for me after the match and I hope it's left them wanting more."
