Voters will go to the polls in all but four of Thurrock's wards on May 2 and are being offered a wide selection of candidates and parties.
But only the Labour and Conservative parties are competing in all 16 available wards.
Thurrock Council leader Andy Smith is bidding to hold on to his Tilbury St Chad's seat. The two previous times he stood in Tilbury, he was unopposed.
This time, however, he faces challenges from Maureen Pearce (Conser-vative) and Liberal Democrat David Coward.
The Liberal Democrats are fighting seven wards, Independents three and the Green Party one. A total of 43 people are bidding for the 16 council seats available.
There are no elections in Orsett, Little Thurrock Blackshots, Little Thurrock Rectory and Corring-ham and Fobbing.
There are no local elections scheduled for Thurrock in 2003, but every seat will be up for grabs in May 2004.
