Southend: Beware the hard sell of security

Shoppers in Southend were today warned to be on the lookout for alarm system businesses who use dubious sales tactics.

A spokesman for Southend Neighbourhood Watch said: "We have received a report that an alarm company is canvassing shoppers in the pedestrian precinct and offering free crime surveys.

"Anyone accepting will be visited by a salesman offering a heavily discounted house alarm system.

"This will have the appearance of a 'too good to miss' offer. However service agreements can run into hundreds of pounds a year."
