Police are trying to trace the driver of a black cab who may hold vital information to an armed robbery in which a Southend security guard was shot in the leg.

He was one of three guards at the Safeway store in Chafford Hundred, near Grays, who were threatened by two balaclava-clad men on Tuesday.

The hooded men, who leaped from the roof as the Securitas staff were restocking the cash machines at 12.30pm, had been hiding at the Burghley Road store.

The guards - a 33-year-old man from Basildon, a 31-year-old man from Southend, and a 21-year-old woman from Kent - were threatened. The 31-year-old was shot in the leg. He was taken to hospital but has since been released.

The robbers, both over 6ft tall, escaped in a dark blue Ford Mondeo.
