A man was hit on the head by a plank of wood in a busy shopping street.
The 58-year-old was walking past Hughes Electrical in Colchester High Street yesterday lunchtime.
The shop is having work carried out on the building and scaffolding has been put around it.
The man was taken to Colchester General Hospital after the wood fell and hit him.
The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive, which is investigating it.
Neil Duncan, spokesperson for Hughes Electrical, said the scaffolding, which was put up about a week ago, was being used for general remedial works to the building and would remain in place for a few weeks.
He said: "We hope the man makes a speedy recovery we will help the Health and Safety Executive investigation in any way we can."
The scaffolding company declined to comment.
