Swimmers using rubber dinghies were today warned to be on their guard after strong winds blew several inflatables far away from the shore.

Southend lifeboats and patrol officers were called out to at least four incidents yesterday afternoon where children playing about with inflatables were being blown out to sea by strong winds.

No one was injured during the day but Coastguard watch manager Anthony Mayhew said: "Swimmers should be careful and not go too far away from the shore."
