Firefighters today battled fierce flames and billowing smoke at a house fire in Leigh.
Crews from Southend and Leigh rushed to the semi-detached property in Shirley Road after receiving reports of the roof alight.

It is not believed any people were at the house when the fire started.
The house backs onto the Arterial Road and is close to the Fairfield BMW showroom, but it is understood that there were no traffic hold-ups caused by the incident.
