Five men who were arrested by police following an allegation of a gang rape in Rayleigh have been released from police bail without charge.

The arrests followed a claim by a 24-year-old woman from Basildon that she was raped in the town after a night out in Southend.

The attack was said to have taken place on July 6 and the men were released on bail until today.

However, the case has now been dropped.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "The men have been released from their bail on Crown Prosecution Service advice."
