A new club triple jump record of 13.96 metres by Mitchell Wilkin in the under-17 boys' event highlighted Southend Athletic Club's performance when they hosted the final round of this season's Eastern Young Athletes matches at their Garon Park Track.

Wilkin, who recently captured international honours for Scotland in the long jump, was also in winning form in this competition in the A event with 6.88.

With all four competing teams being hit by holidays, Southend filled third place on the day with 292 points -- just 1.5 behind runners-up Dacorum with winners Milton Keynes on 337.5. Cambridge and Coleridge were well back on 192.

Just how important every point gained was for the seasiders emerged later when it was revealed that their overall tally of 1333.5 should keep them in the First Division.

With four clubs due to go down to Division Two, Southend were on ten points along with fourth from bottom Herts PV. However, the latter are likely to face the drop, subject to ratification, as their accumulative total was 1323 -- 10.5 less than Southend.
