Despite capping a marvellous season by winning their final Eastern Young Athletes League match of the term, Basildon Athletic Club have been pipped for the Division One title by the narrowest of margins.
At Welwyn Garden City, on a warm day and with a host of stars missing at other junior meetings or holidays, the new towners chalked up victory on 318 points from Orion (298), Herts Phoenix (288) and West Suffolk (280).
Herts Phoenix are the only club to have beaten Basildon's youngsters this year when the new towners were edged out by eight points in an earlier round.
While Basildon were enjoying their day of triumph, Milton Keynes were winning at Southend's Garon Park Track.
Both they and fellow new towners Basildon finished on 19 points, but Milton Keynes finished with the better accumulative total of 1838 compared to 1750 and therefore took the title.
