The Essex Economic Partnership has poured scorn on Government claims that its company law revamp could save small businesses millions of pounds.
Ministers claim the White Paper, Modernising Company Law, will cut red tape and save small businesses £170million.
It aims to simplify the law and reduce the accounting and auditing burdens on small firms.
However, while the Partnership broadly welcomes much of what the paper contains, it is not convinced by the Government's assessment of possible financial advantages.
Partnership board member Michael Large, who is also chairman of the East of England Institute of Directors, said: "The underlying principles the White Paper has of thinking of small business first are very welcome.
"It does clarify the directors' duties, but I would like someone to spell out how the proposals will save £170million. I feel very cautious about that claim."
