Five swimmers from the Borough of Southend Club competed with distinction in the 2002 National Age Group Championships at the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield.
On the first day of competition Sammy Ace improved her best long course time by over eight seconds in the 400 freestyle by recording 4 mins. 46.02 secs which placed her 11th in her own 1989 age group and 26th in the new groupings which included 14 year olds.
In the 800 freestyle, Sammy swam very well, reducing her previous personal best by a a margin of 16 seconds, recording 9 mins. 40.9 secs which placed her seventh in her '89 age group and 17th overall in the new competition.
Felicity Isaac recorded 5 min 19.83 sec to improve her previous best time in the 400 individual medley by a margin of two seconds to place 13th in her 1987 age group and 19th overall in the 14/15 years.
Sarah Wood swam well to record a best ever 2 mins. 29 secs in the 16/17 years 200m butterfly.
Sarah also swam well to record 9.35.28 -- another personal best -- in the 800 freestyle where she was placed seventh in her age group and 15th overall in the new 16/17 year age group.
Jonathan Sayer, 12, swam very well in the 1,500 freestyle to record a personal best of 18 min 29.9 sec which would have won him a gold in last year's event, but now saw him back in fifth.
In the 400 freestyle, Jonathan also recorded a best ever of 4.46.89 to place third in his own age group and ninth overall. He then completed a hat-trick of bests with 2.18 in the 200 freestyle, placing eighth in his age group and 15th overall.
Adam Hickey recorded 4 mins. 37 secs in the 14 years freestyle -- five seconds outside his PB.
