Brothers in arms David and Neil were the heroes on Saturday, as Canvey finally kick-started their promotion quest with victory over Hitchin Town.

Having slipped to the foot of the Ryman Premier after their midweek thrashing by Bishop's Stortford, the Gulls badly needed a convincing win to restore confidence in their somewhat demoralised troops.

Unbelievably though, the hosts were behind after only 28 seconds against visitors Hitchin, with Danny Potter's block from a Carl Drew shot falling neatly for Craig Rydeheard who tucked the ball in with ease.

The Islanders restored parity on 16 minutes though as Scott Forbes crossed for Neil Gregory to head home.

Former Port Vale, Brighton and Leyton Orient midfielder Jeff Minton was making his debut in the middle, and it was he who created the second, feeding David Gregory, who in turn fed brother Neil to bag his second of the game.

The points were made safe on the hour when Lee Protheroe's corner deceived Hitchin keeper Kalli, allowing David Gregory to slide the ball home.
